Supports the intestinal microbiota during travel

A number of studies showed that the intake of probiotics during travelling can reduce the risk of developing diarrhoea. Danish tourists travelling to Egypt that received probiotics developed significantly less diarrhoea compared to tourists that received placebo, showing a protection rate of 39,4%. A study in which Finnish tourists travelled to Turkey showed a similar effect. Those that received probiotics were protected with 39,5% compared to the ones receiving placebo. An American study in a large group of tourists travelling to risk areas all over the world showed that probiotics can reduce diarrhoe incidence with 50%. It has also been shown that the duration of diarrhoea can be shortened with the intake of probiotics. Besides, the literature suggests that probiotics are more effective when they contain multiple species in stead of one.

 

Winclove BV developed in cooperation with the Academic Medical Centre of Amsterdam (AMC) Ecologic® Travel, specifically to reduce the risk of travellers’ diarrhoea. The product contains seven different strains; Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, L. salivarius en L. lactis.  Tests executed at the laboratory, showed these strains can inhibit growth of bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella which often are the cause of traveller's diarhoea.

 

To test whether Ecologic® Travel has beneficial effects regarding travellers’ diarrhoea, a pilot study was executed in cooperation with the AMC and Radboud Medical Centre in Nijmegen. After a first analysis, the results were promising; half of the travellers ecperienced beneficial effects of Ecologic® Travel (results not published) This led to the start of a larger, randomized placebo controlled trial in cooperation with the AMC and GGD’s from Rotterdam and Flevoland. In this study, 800 people will be included to study its effects on incidence and duration of diarrhoea during travelling.
