Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) usually starts in young adults. It is estimated that 4 million people suffer from IBD worldwide. The cause is often unknown. IBD is a group of severe chronic gastrointestinal problems, like Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) that cover the whole gastrointestinal tract. The common symptom is inflammation. Crohn’s Disease can affect the small and large intestine as well as other organs in the digestive tract.
Unlike ulcerative colitis which only affects the inner layer, Crohn’s disease commonly involves all layers of the intestinal wall. The most common symptoms of IBD are diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and fever. IBD may cause colon cancer in a later stage but also organs outside the GI-tract may become affected, like the liver.
Ecologic® 825 is specially designed for reducing IBD associated problems. It contains 10 probiotic strains, which are all classified as the so called “group one” bacteria, which means that they have a
long history of safe use and are not considered to have any potentially pathogenic effect. The bacteria strains are able to survive the GI-tract, and by balancing the microbiota they can positively  influence the immune system. The main feature of the product is the induction of anti-inflammatory cytokines, like IL-10 and TGF-β. Besides, the probiotic bacteria will increase the barrier function of the intestines, to prevent translocation from potentially pathogenic bacteria.
Ecologic® 825 contains a higher cell count than the other Ecologic® products. Besides the probiotic strains, the product contains some inulin and FOS as nutrition for the bacteria, as well as a special mineral mix. This mineral mix increases the activity of the probiotic bacteria after rehydration.
